An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for a significant new building in the Abbey Quarter in the heart of Kilkenny City. This decision follows an extensive review process and marks a major milestone for the development.

The Kilkenny Abbey Quarter Development Partnership initially submitted plans to Kilkenny County Council in May 2022. The proposed mixed-use building will vary in height from four to five storeys, with the top floor set back. The building is designed to include three to four floors of office accommodation, along with ground-floor mixed uses such as reception areas, offices, retail spaces, and support facilities. The plans also include signage and associated site development works.

After requesting additional information from the applicant, the local authority granted planning permission in May 2023, subject to 12 conditions. This decision was subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Following a thorough review, An Bord Pleanála granted permission for the development on July 16, 2024, subject to nine conditions. This approval paves the way for the construction of the new building, which is expected to enhance the Abbey Quarter and contribute to the ongoing regeneration of Kilkenny City.
